Hello, my name is Mr Butler and I am the Head of Music at Passmores Academy. The Music department is a vibrant and exciting place to be where students are passionately encouraged to develop their creative practical musical skills and reach their musical potential.
Students in Year 7 and 8 have one music lesson a week in a specialised music classroom. Music lessons are fast paced, inspiring and fun with a strong emphasis on students developing their performing, composing, listening and appraising skills while immersing themselves in a wide diversity of musical styles and genres.
Year 7 & 8 students perform and compose using the keyboard and piano, glockenspiel, African djembe, untuned percussion, the guitar and ukulele and their voices as well as manipulating GarageBand and Logic music software in order to create their own soundscapes and contemporary music using the latest music technology.
The Year 7 music curriculum is driven by an understanding and application of the core elements of music and incudes units covering Composing, Performing Music Together, Arranging Music, African Music, Film Music and Chromaticism. The Year 8 music curriculum builds on what students have learnt in Year 7 and focuses on units including Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’, Reggae, Blues, Horror Film Music, Contemporary musics and Music Technology. Students in Year 9 can opt to study Edexcel GCSE Music over a three year course.
The GCSE Music course comprises three units: Performing (30% coursework), Composing (30% coursework) and Set Works (40% written listening exam). More details can be found in the exam specification (below). Students opting for GCSE Music are expected to contribute to the extra-curricular music programme.
We offer an extensive extra-curricular programme for students which include a pop choir, soul band, steel pan groups, African drumming ensemble, recording club, ukulele group, wind band, GCSE composing surgery as well as many student-led groups and bands. There are many opportunities for students to perform and showcase their talents throughout the year both inside and outside the school. Recently, Passmores musicians have had the opportunity to work with the London Sinfonia, Harlow Chorus, Harlow Symphony Orchestra, Hackney Colliery Band, Industry Education in Music and Hertford Regional College. We also put on three outstanding school productions a year, most recently ‘Into The Woods’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘High School Musical’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. There are also opportunities for students to have music tuition in the Passmores Music School which runs every Tuesday evening. Currently tuition is offered on piano, voice, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, horn, violin, drum kit, classical guitar, bass guitar and electric guitar.
